Frequently Asked Questions (cont)
Q: There is a new version on AppStore. How should I update to it?For most applications where there is no user-data involved (say games, or utilities like flashlight, etc), there is no need to be concerned. During the update process, AppStore program on iPhone/iTouch attempts to detect an application by its unique bundle ID, then copies over the new version to the device, copies over old installation's data to the new one, and then delete the old one. This process must work flawlessly; and it must not be interrupted. If anything goes wrong then there is a chance you would lose your data. Note that during the installation/update process, the application being updated is NOT running. It has absolutely no control on what's going on. iPhone/iTouch device is no different than any other computer. If a computer or device is not in a stable state then the chances of things going wrong would substantially increase. iPhone O/S is a relatively new operating system. You've probably seen much older and mature desktop systems of many years, freezing, not responding, rendering blue screens, etc. iPhone O/S, although it seems to be much more stable than those, is still a design of mere mortals, and not immune to similar memory corruptions. If you have any doubts that your device may somewhat be in a polluted state; if 300+ emails flooded the email client and the screen got frozen, of if some application stopped responding, so you had to kill it, etc., etc., then it is a very good idea to reboot your iPhone/iPod. Especially prior to doing an update... You really don't want to take chances where AppStore application may fail, resulting in losing all your data. Second, you may want to sync your device with iTunes. You wouldn't want to call Apple to complain about losing your applications/data, and reply 'No' to the question: 'Did you sync your device with iTunes, so we can recover from?'.. And lastly, you would always want to take regular backups from iDB. Even if you can restore it back only in the 'Pro' version, you would still want to take keep some older copies of your data on your desktop. iDB backups are in standard CSV format, they are perfectly readable in any text editor or spreadsheet. So if you realize you've been doing something wrong in the last 10 days, you can always go back to an older copy and see how you can rectify it. So if you have valuable data on your device you cannot jeopordize, the things we would strongly recommend prior to an update are:
